Congratulations!
Martin Anderson signs a letter of intent to play baseball with
LSU-Eunice.

The Gold Award

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers celebrates the creative achievement of America's teens.  In 1923, The Awards were founded in order to offer recognition and scholarships for students for their artistic talents, instead of their academic or athletic abilities.  Students who excel in the visual arts and creative writing participate in the The Awards in order to earn recognition, get their work exhibited or published, and to earn scholarships.  Previous winners of this award include artists and writers such as Andy Warhol, Joyce Carol Oates, and Sylvia Plath.

This year, two Cedar Creek students have been awarded the Gold Key, the highest level of achievement on the regional level.  Gold Key works are forwarded to New York City for national adjudication.  We are proud to announce Chloe Kaczvinsky, with her story "Arid,' and Saraf Ahmed, with her story "First," as winners of the Gold Key Award.  Congratulations on these outstanding achievements!

Gov. Jindal Appointment

Gov. Bobby Jindal announced in a written statement that he is appointing Connie Bradford of Ruston to fill the vacant position to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).
"I'm pleased to appoint Connie to serve on BESE.  She has extensive professional experience in the education community and she supports the types of reforms we need to make in our education system so we can give our students the opportunity to pursue their dreams right here in Louisiana," the statement said.
"Connie's experience at the schoolhouse level will be invaluable since we know the best reform ideas come from lessons learned at the local level."
Connie will serve as an at-large member of the BESE.
She is head of school and her duties include implementing curriculum and instruction for students and overseeing professional development of the school's faculty and staff.

2009 NCTE Promising Young Writer Winner

Art Leangsuksun was one of 487 students nominated for the 2009 NCTE Promising Young Writers Program. Only 163 students were chosen as outstanding writers.
Each student submitted two pieces of writing which were read and evaluated by two judges.  Papers were judged on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style.

Art was the only student from the state of Louisiana to be selected. He was awarded a certificate of participation.  Art is a student of Mrs. Glenn.

Excellent Writing Talent Honored

Dana Bennett, a senior, is one of 544 high school seniors (one of five in Louisiana) awarded as an Outstanding Writer in the 2009 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. Students were selected by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).  The recipients were chosen from 1,783 students nominated in their junior year by their teachers from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Canada and American schools abroad.
The Achievement Awards in Writing program was established in 1957 to encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize publicly some of the best student writers in the nation.  Assessments of student writing are based on students' samples of their won best prose or verse and on impromptu themes that are written under supervision.  A team of English teachers judge the writing, looking especially for writing that demonstrates effective and imaginative use of language to inform and move an audience.
Dana Bennett received a certificate recognizing her accomplishment.  She also received a card highlighting her achievement to attach to her college application forms.

Cedar Creek AP Scholars Recipients

Kramer Allen

Vikas Gullapalli

Two students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing threeor more AP Exams with grades of 3 or highter.  The AP Scholars are Kramer Allen and Vikas Gullapalli.
Of this year's award recipients at Cedar Creek, one is a junior, Kramer Allen.  This student has at least one more year in which to comlete college level work and possibly earn a higher-level AP Scholar Award.  Vikas Gullapalli, a 2009 graduate, is attending Emory university located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Through more than 30 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides motivated and academically prepared studetns with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admissions process.  Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standrads expected by college faculty at some of the nation's leading liberal arts and research institutions.  More than 3,600 college and universities annually receive AP grades.  Over 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and or placement for qualifying exam grades.  Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.
The College Board is a not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to connect studetns to college success and opportunity.  Founded in 1900, the association is composed of more than 5,600 schools, college, universities, and other educational organizations.  Each year, the College Board serves seven million students and their parents, 23,000 high schools, and 2,800 colleges through major programs and services in college readiness, college admissions, guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning.  Among its best-know progams are the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT, and the Advanced Placement Program (AP).  The College board is committed to the principles of excellence and equity and that commitment is embodies in all of its programs, services, activities, and concerns.

Geometry Quilt Winners

On Wednesday, April 15th, some students at Cedar Creek finalized a term project by awarding the local chapter of the March of Dimes a check for  $2075 .  The project was conducted by the geometry classes and consisted of designing original quilt blocks and putting these together to form 3 quilts that were raffled on Wednesday.  The quilts were a part of a project that investigated areas of quadrilaterals, scale drawings, and the use of symmetry in design.  Each student participated in quilting their blocks and then sold raffle tickets to raise money for the March of Dimes.  The winners of the three quilts were  Drew and Tyler Jimmerson, Christopher Warren, and Jeffery King.  There were 60 sophomore and freshman students who participated and several adults contributed by piecing the fabric blocks and helping to complete the hand-quilting on each block

Trike-A-Thon

Cedar Creek School Pre-Kindergarten participated in the St. Jude Trike-a-thon on Friday, March 6th. 36 children participated in this event, raising $2,381.00.

During the week, the children learned the rules of bike safety: Always wear a helmet, Never ride in the street, Always be careful near driveways, and Always watch where you are going. Donations enable St. Jude Hospital to continue its mission of finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is denied treatment because of the families inability to pay. A big thank you to all who supported our annual event!

The National Shakespeare Competition in 2009 at Cedar Creek School was the most successful to date!  The competition is open to all Cedar Creek students, but the AP and Pre-AP classes have the competition built into their curriculum.  Each participant must choose both a sonnet and a 20 line monologue to perform for the judges.  They are judged on how well they remembered their piece as well as conveyed the message through “acting”, although the participants aren’t really to act out the piece with costumes and props.  This style of performance is called Oral Interpretation.  The freshman students get training and guidance in their speech class taught by Mrs. Huckaby. “Getting to work with the freshman, sets them up for the next four years” said Huckaby.  The students usually pick their pieces before Christmas break and perform them at the end of January.  The overall winner from Cedar Creek gets to perform in the Branch Competition in Monroe on Sunday February 8th at the Strauss Playhouse Youngstage at 2:00.
